Whether you’re thinking about booking a newborn session or already have a date on the books, we’re sure you’re a bit curious about what, exactly, goes on during a newborn session. Keep reading to learn about what actually happens during a newborn photography session with Angela Vaughns Photography.
Lifestyle newborn sessions are the perfect way to capture your new baby. Newborn sessions focus on feedings, swaddles, nurseries and snuggle time photographed in the comfort of your own home. We do not pose babies- no props, baskets, or babies in staged positions. I believe babies are beautiful just the way they are, and I love focusing on all the tiny baby details and the connection between the family and its newest member. Although your images are not fully posed, I will direct you and your family to capture you as naturally as I can.
Day Of The Session: When I arrive, we will walk around your home and look for the areas with the best natural light. Most often, that’s the living room, master bedroom, and the nursery. Even though my kiddos are past the newborn stage, I vividly remember what it’s like to have a newborn and I was not in the mood to clean. Please don’t feel like you have to deep clean the house before I arrive. We can move things out of the camera frame as we go along.
Your Baby: Your newborn is perfect! I don’t try and make babies sleep or place them in particular poses. I recommend you have your newborn dressed in a simple form-fitting onesie. At some point, I will likely take it off and get some nude or near-nude newborn photos. Be sure to gather a few of your favorite swaddle blankets to wrap your baby in. I recommend feeding the baby as much as he or she wants about fifteen minutes prior to my arrival. Newborn sessions can take some time, that is okay. I do not do major posing or have any expectations of how the baby should behave (alert or asleep). We let the baby guide the session. What is important is that we capture this beautiful time in your life.
Siblings: A newborn in the house can be a big change for siblings! I like to try and get sibling and family photos at the beginning of the session because the sibling may lose interest in me quickly. I do not have any expectations for the siblings, and will never force them into doing anything they aren’t comfortable with. Please prepare the sibling for the session by telling them that a friend is coming to visit and take some photos of your family. It is always best not to surprise them.
Parents: Having a new baby is hard and wonderful all at the same time. My goal is not to make this time in your life look perfect but to show you just how beautiful it is. I want you to be relaxed and at ease when I am photographing your family. You don’t need to be anything but yourself.
